There are many different ways to load and transport a wheelchair in a vehicle. Some people may be able to fold up the wheelchair and load it into a trunk. For larger mobility devices, however, loading the wheelchair inside the vehicle and securing it to the floor is the only viable option. Do you know how to safely load and secure a wheelchair in your car? Keep reading for a step-by-step guide.
Wheelchair Lifts versus Ramps
The exact loading method you use will depend heavily upon whether you have a wheelchair ramp or a wheelchair lift for your car. Wheelchair lifts are mechanical platforms that lift the wheelchair into the vehicle with a motor, making it much easier to load without having to navigate inclines and tight spaces at the end of a ramp. They’re especially beneficial if you have a tall vehicle like a van or SUV, where the height makes using a ramp more difficult.
Ramps are a simple, more affordable option for loading a wheelchair. You can usually purchase a foldable platform that can be pulled out and placed as needed, then folded and stored inside the car. Some vehicles can also be equipped with an automatic ramp, which slides out and in with the press of a button. They’re usually better suited for cars with a lower entry point.
Loading the Wheelchair Safely
Before you attempt to load the wheelchair, make sure you’re parked on a flat, even surface to reduce the risk of shifting or of the wheelchair rolling in an unexpected direction during the process. Then, secure your lift or ramp in place. If using a lift, make sure it’s locked and aligned with your car’s energy. If you have a ramp, check that the incline is manageable and the end is securely positioned against the ground.
If using a lift, position the wheelchair on the platform and lock the brakes in place before engaging the lift mechanism. This will raise the wheelchair to the entry’s level. You can then roll the wheelchair inside. With a ramp, guide the wheelchair up the incline with steady, consistent pressure, ensuring that you’re maintaining control.
Securing the Wheelchair
Once the wheelchair is loaded, it’s essential to secure it in place to prevent any movement while driving. You can choose from 1 of 2 securing systems:
- Tie-Downs: Simply attach tie-down straps to the wheelchair’s frame, securing them to the vehicle’s anchor points.
- Docking Systems: These must be professional installed in your vehicle, but once this is done, they provide a base where the wheelchair can easily be locked into place, preventing any movement.
Whether you use lifts or wheelchair ramps for cars, be sure that you’re following all safety guidelines in order to protect yourself, the wheelchair, and the wheelchair user from any harm.
