The final group stage matches on June 26 determined the last five teams to advance: Romania, Belgium, Slovakia (from Group E), and Turkey, Georgia (from Group F). Hungary was eliminated after Georgia’s surprising 2-0 win over Portugal in their final Group F match, securing their spot as one of the best third-placed teams.
In addition to Hungary, the other teams eliminated in the group stage are Poland, Croatia, Scotland, Serbia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, and Albania.
The standout match in the Round of 16 is France vs. Belgium, as the teams are ranked second and third in the FIFA rankings, respectively. The two sides have a rich history, having faced each other 75 times, with France winning 26, drawing 19, and losing 30. However, in their clash at Düsseldorf on the evening of July 1, France was favored due to their more balanced squad.
England was initially expected to face the Netherlands in the Round of 16, but Georgia’s advancement means that the two top-10 FIFA-ranked teams avoided each other. Instead, England will play Slovakia, a less formidable opponent, while the Netherlands will meet Romania. The Austria vs. Turkey matchup is considered more evenly matched, as both teams are seen as “dark horses” in the tournament.

Portugal will have the chance to avenge their 0-2 friendly loss to Slovenia in March 2024 when the two teams face off again in Frankfurt on the evening of July 1. Meanwhile, Georgia, after defeating Portugal, will look to cause another upset against another Iberian Peninsula representative, Spain.
The remaining two matches, Switzerland vs. Italy and Germany vs. Denmark, were determined earlier and will kick off the Round of 16 on the evening of June 29.
