How to Pack and Load a Van Efficiently

Packing and loading a van is not as easy and straightforward as it may seem. That’s right; in order to get the most from the space you have available and to ensure the safety of all contents, there are some tips you can follow. Let’s run through some of the top things you need to keep in mind when packing and loading;

Create a Checklist

Making the most of the van space you have available is paramount – especially if you’re hiring a van – and a checklist is the solution to doing this. First you need to make a list of everything you want to move. Make sure you take note of all specifications when it comes to height, width and depth. Then measure the space you have available in the van. Next, break down your master moving list into smaller sections that outlines the different loads you’re going to carry. When doing the sublists, it’s always best to put the heavier, bulkier items to the top and put the smaller, lighter items around those items. Also, be sure to think about weight distribution and visualise how you’re going to pack each load. If priority is a factor, always pack those items first and leave the items you don’t need further down the list.

Use the Proper Supplies

Wouldn’t it be so easy to just pack everything in to the back of a van and close the doors? The reality is very different! Organising items into specific boxes and ensuring they are protected and labelled correctly is probably the most time consuming part of moving but it’s essential.  For this you’ll need to invest in proper packing supplies like containers, boxes, padding, blankets, tape, straps, and labelling materials. The same goes for those that are looking for refrigerated van hire. Ensuring your items are packed correctly in a temperature controlled environment will ensure product quality, reduce spoilage and keep the contents safe.

Disassemble Large Items

See that corner couch that’s made up of three different sections? It’s your job to disassemble it before packing it away for transportation. Again, disassembling large items like sofas, tables and shelving units may be time-consuming but it will reduce the risk of damage during transportation and it will help to ensure you maximise every inch of the space in the van. One tip to remember when taking things apart is to keep all bolts, screws and small parts in a carefully labelled bag with the corresponding item.

Maximise Space

You want to reduce the amount of runs you have to do as much as possible so trust us when we say it pays to maximise space when packing. Our advice here is to stack safely and utilise every corner that’s available to you. Put the large bulky items in first and pack the smaller items around them. Get the smaller items and pack them away into drawers and cabinets with paddings. Make sure you pack items that you need first towards the rear of the van for easy access when you get to your destination magazinpapers.
